Immunology and Allergy Flashcards
How does the innate immune system first recognise a pathogen
Using PAMPS- pathogen associated molecular proteins e.g.
-bacterial cell wall peptidoglycans
-bacterial metabolic proteins
Where are the following cells found of the reticuloendothelial system
-Kupffer cells
-Alveolar macrophages
-Langerhans cells
-Epithelial M cells
-Payers patches
-Liver
-Lung
-Skin
-Gut
-Gut
What is the role of these cells in the innate immune system
-mast cells
-macrophages
-neutrophils
-mast cells secrete histamine –> vasodilation to increase vascular permeability
-macrophages: recognise PAMPs and secrete cytokines; attract more leukocytes and causes localised inflammation; particulate in phagocytosis and then act as antigen presenting cells to the adaptive immune system
-Neutrophils: phagocytosis
