Immunology Flashcards
What is the Immune System?
Protects your body from foreign (outside) invaders.
Types of Antigens (bad guys)
Bacteria, viruses, fungi, and toxins
T-cells are found in what body gland?
Thymus Gland
Name some Immune System parts
- Skin
- Thymus Gland
- Bone Marrow
- Spleen
- Lymph Nodes
- Tonsils
- White Blood Cells
Y shaped and is produced by B-cells. Used to fight antigens
Antibodies
Two main types of Immunity
Adaptive and Innate
Type of immunity that holds no memory of what it kills. Has no antibodies.
Innate Immunity
Type of immunity where antibodies are made and it holds memory of what it kills.
Adaptive Immunity
Adaptive Immunity is broken down into what two groups?
Active and Passive
What is Adaptive Active Immunity?
Antibodies are produced in your body and the antibodies have a long memory of what it kills.
What is Adaptive Passive Immunity?
You are GIVEN the antibodies via breastmilk, through the placenta, or with blood products. This immunity has a SHORT memory.
These cells are “large-eaters” and eat other cells. They display antigens of the things they eat on their surface as a way to warn other cells that there is an infection.
Macrophages
These cells eat other cells, but do not put antigens of the things they eat on their surface to warn other cells. The nucleus looks very strange. These cells love to kill.
Neutrophils
What does “phagocytosis” mean?
Phago= To eat, Cyto= cell, so phagocytosis is the process of eating other cells.
These cells are often called messenger cells and present antigens to T-cells.
Dendritic Cells
