Immunoglobulin Isotypes Flashcards
IgA
Prevents attachment of bacteria and viruses to mucous membranes. Does not fix complement. Released in secretions. Breast milk.
IgM
Produced in the 1’ (immediate) response. Fixes complement. Does not cross placenta. Antigen receptor on surface of B cells. Pentamer when secreted.
IgD
Unclear function. Found on surface of B cells.
IgE
Binds mast cells and basophils. Cross-links. Immediate hypersensitivity. Release histamine. Activates eosinophils. Lowest concentration in serum.
IgG
Main antibody in 2’ (delayed) response to an antigen. Most abundant isotype in serum. Fixes complement. Crosses the placenta (passive immunity for infants). Opsonizes bacteria. Neutralizes bacterial toxins and viruses.
