Immunoglobulin Flashcards
What are immunoglobulins?
Are antibodies that are Y shaped glycoproteins produced by B cells
What is the main function of immunoglobulins?
They bind specific antigens to help eliminate pathogens
What are the five main classes of ummunoglobulins?
IgM, IgG, IgA, IgE and IgD
When is IgM produced during an immune repsonse?
IgM is the first antibody produced in an immune response
What is the structure of secreted IgM?
It is a pentamer joined by a J chain (kinda star shaped)
What is the function of IgM on B cells?
It acts as a B cell receptor (BCR) in monomeric form
What are the main functions of IgM?
Complement activation and pathogen agglutination
What is the most abundant antibody in serum?
IgG
What is the structure of IgG?
Is a monomer
How long does IgG last in the blood?
It has a long half life of around 23 days
What are key functions of IgG?
- Neutralisation
- Opsonisation
- Complement activation
- Antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity
What immune response is IgG mainly involved in?
Secondary immune response - memory response
What role does IgG play in pregnancy?
It crosses the placenta to provide passive immunity to the featus
Where is IgA mainly found?
In mucosal areas and secretions
What is the structure of secretory IgA?
Is a dimer joined by a J chain and secretory component
What is the main function of IgA?
Mucosal protection by neutralising pathogens and preventing adherence
How does IgA protect newborns?
Through breast milk providing mucosal immunity
What is the structure of IgE?
Is a monomer
What cells does IgE bind to?
Mast cells and basophils via high affinity Fc receptors
What happens when allergens cross link IgE?
Mast cells degranulate releasing histamines and causing allergic reactions
What is IgE’s main role in immunity?
Defence against parasitic worms and involvement in allergies
What clinical conditions show elevated IgE?
Allergies and parasitic infections
Which immunoglobulin class activated complement best?
IgM followed by IgG
Which immunoglobulins act as B cell receptors?
IgM and IgD
