Immunity to Viral Infection Flashcards
What does the Jak/Stat pathway do?
inactivates protein translation, induces RNAse activity, destroys virus and host cell
What activates the Jak/Stat pathway?
IFN a/B
What happens if you don’t have any antibodies?
You get a bacterial infection
What happens if you don’t have any T cells?
You get a viral infection
What kind of immunity is most important for fighting viral infections?
T cell mediated immunity
What is the major difference between C1MHC and C2MHC?
C1MHC is used to activate CD8 and C2MHC is used to activate CD4
What happens when CD8 is stimulated?
CD8 proliferates and exits into the blood strea,
What has to happen for a CD8 cell to become a CTL?
Must exit the node and start producing granules
What activates the caspase pathway?
granzyme
What is the back up method the CTL uses to kill a virally infected cell?
FasL on CTL binds to Fas on infected cell surface.
What is IL-10 and how can viruses use it to their advantage?
IL-10 down regulates CTL activity, viruses ca steal IL-10 gene from host cells and use it down regulate CTL
Why do CD8 cells rely on CD4 cells?
Because CD8 cells require IL-2 but they cannot produce it very well so CD4 produces most of the IL-2
