Immunity Against Herbivores Flashcards
What hormone does response to herbivory rely mostly on?
Jasmonic acid
What are HAMPs?
Herbivore associated molecular patterns
What types of defence against herbivorous insects are there?
- Metabolites (photoanticipins)
- Proteins: proteinase inhibitors, lectins
What are examples of photoanticipins?
Glucosinolates
Benzoaxinoids
What is a response from glucosinolates?
‘Mustard oil bomb’
Toxic mustard oil is released when the cell is broken.
Insects do not like the taste and it is toxic to them.
What is a response from benzoaxinoids?
Benzoaxinoids are released when the cell is broken by herbivory
What are benzoaxinoid deficient mutants?
Benzoaxinoids not produced, more susceptible to aphids.
What do volatiles do and what are examples of volatiles?
Volatiles repel herbivory
Aromatic volatiles. Terpenoid volatiles
What is E-beta-fernasene?
A volatile that repels aphids because it mimics the aphid alarm hormone.
What does overexpression of E-beta-fernasene cause?
GM in wheat to resist aphids, but aphids can become resistant.
