Immunity Flashcards
What is the role of the immune system?
To prevent pathogens causing disease
How can the Innate Immune system be subdivided?
First Line and Second Line
What does the first line of the Innate Immune System involve?
Barrier Immunity:
Skin
Mucous membranes
Stomach Acid
What does the Second Line of the Innate Immune System involve?
Cell-Mediated Immunity:
Inflammatory response
Phagocytosis
Which immune cells are involved in the Innate Immune response?
Primarily neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells
What type of cell does the Adaptive Immune System involve?
Lymphocytes (type of WBC)
What are the two subdivisions of the Adaptive Immune System?
Humoral and Cell-Mediated Response
Which type of lymphocyte is involved in the Humoral Response?
B-Lymphocytes (bone marrow derived)
Which type of lymphocyte is involved in the Cell-Mediated Response?
T-lymphocyte (Thymus gland matured)
Where are pathogens found for the Humoral Response?
Extracellular
Where are pathogens found in the Cell-Mediated Response?
Intracellularly
What are the two types of Immune Response?
Innate and Adaptive
