Haemostasis Flashcards
What substance binds platelets to each other in a primary haemostatic plug?
Fibrinogen
What substance starts the coagulation cascade?
Tissue Factor
What converts fibrinogen to fibrin to form a secondary haemostatic plug?
Thrombin
Which three substances are released by the platelet granules during platelet aggregation?
TXA2
ADP
5-HT
How does the thrombolytic cascade start?
Thrombin promotes production of Antithrombin and conversion of Plasminogen to Plasmin
What does Plasmin do?
Breaks apart Fibrin struts
What is the order of the Extrinsic pathway?
TF -> VII -> X
What is the order of the Intrinsic Pathway?
XII -> XI -> IX + VIII -> X + V
How does Aspirin affect clot formation?
Prevents release of TXA2 (prostaglandin)
How does Clopidogrel affect clot formation?
Prevents release of ADP
How does Abciximab affect clot formation?
Competitively binds the GP IIb/IIIa receptor, preventing binding of fibrinogen
How does Alteplase affect clot formation?
tPA analogue, causing formation of Plasmin from Plasminogen, and thereby breaking the Fibrin Mesh
What causes platelets to stick to a breach in the endothelium?
Exposed collagen fibres and Von Willebrand Factor (vWF)
