Immunity Flashcards
Lysogeny
Virus DNA gets integrated into host DNA and become a dormant state which can be reactivated later
Opsonization
Enhancement of phagocytosis by antibodies or complement proteins
Toxoids
Vaccine preparation containing altered toxins or exotoxins secreted by bacteria but retains immunogenicity eg tetanus toxoid
Prodromal period of infection
Period when general symptoms of infection occur eg nausea, fever, headache
Acme period of infection
Period when specific symptoms occur eg high fever, chills, skin colour changes, swollen lymph nodes, bp changes etc
Incubation period
Time between entry of microbe and appearance of symptoms
Convalescent period
When body systems return to normal after infection
Margination
Leukocytes travel along the endothelium during infection after fluid loss in affected tissue, leaving the blood viscous
