Immunity Flashcards
1
Q
active immunity
A
where your immune system makes its own antibodies after being stimulated by an antigen
it is long-lasting and active artificial immunity is becoming immune due to a vaccination
2
Q
passive immunity
A
being given antibodies made by a different organism so your immune system doesn’t produce antibodies on its own
only lasts for a short time
passive natural immunity would be a baby recieving maternal antibodies
3
Q
what do vaccines contain
A
- weakened viruses
- dead bacteria
- an antigen bearing fragment of the pathogen
and causing the body to produce antibodies and memory cells
4
Q
what is horizontal evolution
A
where bacteria may copy a plasmid which offers antibiotic resistance and pass it on to an adjoining bacteria so it can now also be resident so DNA can be shared without reproduction
