HIV and AIDS Flashcards
1
Q
what is HIV
A
human immunodeficiency virus which is transmitted by direct transfer of bodily fluids
2
Q
what is a retrovirus
A
a virus that contains RNA instead of DNA in its capsid, e.g HIV
3
Q
life cycle of HIV
A
- viral gp120 receptors bind to CD4 receptors on T-helper cells
- viral lipid envelop fuses with host csm
- viral RNA and proteins enter the host cell
- RNA is then reverse transcribed to cDNA using viral protein reverse transcriptase
- the viral cDNA is then integrated into host cells DNA using viral enzyme intergrase
- viral DNA is now transcribed and translated by host cell
- this produces viral RNA and proteins which are assembled into viral particles
- these viral particles then become enclosed in the host cells membrane creating the viruses lipid envelope
- the host cell is eventually killed
4
Q
stages from HIV to AIDS
A
- acute phase
- fevers, sweats, headaches, swollen lymph node
- rapid viral replication and loss of T-helper cells - chronic phase
- no symptoms but increased risk of colds
- dormant diseases such as TB can be reactivated - disease phase
- increasing viral load and decreasing T-helper cell numbers
- low T-helper cell numbers result in increased risk of opportunistic infections which can be fatal
5
Q
antiretroviral drugs
A
- entry inhibitor
- stops the HIV glycoprotein from binding to CD4 receptor so virus cannot enter a host cell - reverse transcriptase inhibitor
- stops viral HIV RNA from being converted to DNA - intergrase inhibitor
- viral DNA can not be incorporated into host DNA
