Q

State the definition of immune system, immunology, immunity, immune response.

A

Immune system= tissues, cells, and molecules that mediate resistance to infections
Immunology= study of structure and function of the immune system
immunity= ability of a host to resist or eliminate potentially harmful foreign materials or abnormal cell
Immune response= collective and coordinated response to the introduction of foreign substances in an individual mediated by the cells and molecules of the immune system

Q

Explain the role of immune system

A
  • Immune system is the cells, tissues and molecules that mediate resistance to infections by recognition and removal of the foreign molecules.
  • It defence against microbes such as bacteria, viruses as well as parasites.
  • It also defence against the growth of tumour cells by killing it.
  • Lastly, it maintains the homeostasis by removing the worn out or dead cells from the body.

Q

List the difference between innate and acquired immunity.

A

INNATE IMMUNITY

  • Rapid response
  • Does not have memory
  • Have wider range of microbes
  • Present right from birth
  • Exposure to antigen is not required
  • Host cell receptors are non specific

ACQUIRED IMMUNITY

  • slower response
  • Does have memory
  • Have specific microbes
  • Acquired during the course of life
  • Exposure to antigen is required
  • Host cell receptors are specific
