Immunisation Flashcards
What can immunisation stop?
A person getting infections
What does immunisation involve?
Injecting dead or inactive pathogens into the body
What does antigenic mean?
They carry antigens
Within immunisations what is antigenic?
The pathogens inserted
Do the antigenic pathogens harm the body?
No
What does the body produce due to antigenic pathogens?
Antibodies to help destroy them although they are harmless to your body
What do the antigens trigger?
Memory lymphocytes to be made
What do the memory lymphocytes do?
They cause a secondary immune response as if the same type of live pathogen that you have been immunised with the memory lymphocytes can fight them off quickly
What are pros of immunisation?
Big outbreaks of diseases can be prevented if large percentage of population are immunised
Herd immunity
What are cons of immunisation?
Immunisation doesn’t always work
You can sometimes have bad reactions to the vaccine e.g. swelling
