Immune System Test Flashcards
What are the 3 lines of defense?
-Physical and Chemical Barriers (Innate Immunity)
-Nonspecific Resistance (Innate Immunity)
-Specific Resistance (Acquired Immunity)
What are physical barriers?
First line of defense,
the skin, mucous membrane, hair, cilia, urine, defecation and vomiting
What are chemical barriers?
First line of defense, lysozyme an enzyme in tears, gastric juice, saliva, acidity, sebum, hyaluronic acid
What is nonspecific resistance?
Second line of defense, destroys invaders using
-phagocytic cells
-inflammation
-fever
What are phagocytic cells?
Phagocytic cells ingest and destroy all microbes that pass into body tissue
What is an example of a phagocytic cell?
an example is a macrophages, they injest the pathogen, use what they can, take a marker and present it to interleukin-1 which gives it to the t-cells
