What is the AIRE gene?
A
Located in the medulla of the thymus and expreses peripheral genes (antigens of the brain, etc.) that sequesters T cells that match these antigens and label them for apoptosis

What are the different molecular differentiation possibilities for T cells?

Th1:
Proinflammation
Secretes IFN-gamma primarily
Th2:
Counteracts Th1
Proallergenic
Secretes antiinflammatory cytokines, especially IL10 and TGF-beta
Th17:
Proinflammatory
Implicated in autoimmune responses
Effective against pathogens
Secretes IL17 primarily
Th3:
From the gut, induce mucosal immunity, protect against non-selfantigens
Mediate non-inflammatory environment
