Immune System Flashcards
Name the 3 general functions of the blood.
Transportation, regulation, protection
What does the blood transport around the body?
o2, co2, nutrients, wastes, hormones
Explain the bloods function of regulation.
Regulates pH of body fluids + cooling properties of water in blood plasma helps adjust body temp.
Explain the bloods function of protection.
Injury -> blood clots protect against excessive blood loss in CV system, WBCs produce antibodies -> protects against disease
What are the names of the 2 other proteins that also protect against disease?
Complement + interferons
What is the pH of blood?
7.35-7.45
What does blood consist of?
55% plasma + 45% formed elements
What do formed elements in the blood include?
RBCs (erythrocytes), WBCs (leukocytes) + platelets
What are the 2 types of leukocytes?
Granular (contain granules visible under light microscope after staining) + agranular
Name the 3 granular leukocytes.
Neutrophils, eosinophils + basophils
Name agranular leukocytes.
T + B lymphocytes, natural killer cells + monocytes
Define haematocrit.
% of RBCs in whole blood
Define haemopoisesis.
Formation of blood cells in pluripotent stem cells + occurs in red bone marrow
