Immune System 1 Flashcards
Describe the role of the immune system in the protection of the body from foreign invaders and abnormal self antigens.
-A coordinated army of cells, proteins and chemicals
-Prevent entry of foreign matter into the body (1st and 2nd line of defence)
-Watch out for changes to our own cells
-Clean up damaged tissue & assist with repair
-Have ‘memory’ of previous threats
Describe the basic structure of the branches of the immune system
Identify key connecting interactions between the innate and specific defences, and appreciate the implication to the individual if these are broken
Describe the role of the innate defences in the initialisation of early immune responses
Explain how the Non-specific or Innate parts of the Immune system act to control invading organisms or abnormal body cells.
Explain the role of the humoral and cell-mediated branches of the specific defences in immunity
Identify the targets of the humoral immune response and describe the process by which they are identified and destroyed.
Explain the downstream effects of suppression or dysfunction of the humoral immune system components.
Describe how vaccination can provide immunty to infection, and why some vaccines require boosters, yet others do not.
Describe the dual role that Helper T (CD4) cells have in the regulation of the Cellular and Humoral immune responses
Identify the targets of the cellular immune response and describe the process by which they are identified and destroyed.
Explain the downstream effects of suppression or dysfunction of the cell-mediated immune system components.
