Immune Response Flashcards
1
Q
What cells does the immune response recognise?
A
- Pathogens
- Cells from other organisms of the same species
- Abnormal body cells
- Toxins
2
Q
How can the immune system respond to foreign cells?
A
- Lysozomes breaking down foreign cells
- Phagocytosis
- Antibody production
3
Q
What is an antigen?
A
Molecules present on the surface of cells which trigger an immune response
- Unique and specific to particular cells and pathogens
4
Q
What is an antigen complementary to?
A
An antibody
5
Q
What are the 2 types of leukocytes?
A
Phagocytes
- Destroy with phagocytosis
- Granular cytoplasm
- Lobed nucleus
- Can differentiate into neutrophils or monocytes (mature into macrophages)
Lymphocytes
- Smaller than phagocytes
- Large round nucleus
- Kills intruders directly by producing antibodies
- Can differentiate into T or B cells
