Defence Mechanisms Flashcards
1
Q
What are types of defence mechanisms?
A
- Non specific physical barriers
- Non specific inflammatory response
- Specific immune response
2
Q
What are examples of non-specific physical barriers?
A
Skin
Tears
Saliva
3
Q
What is an example of a non-specific inflammatory response?
A
Phagocytosis
- Region invaded with pathogens swells
4
Q
What are examples of specific immune response?
A
- Cell mediated response via T lymphocytes
- Humoral response via B lymphocytes
- This process is much slower than non-specific
5
Q
What is the second line of defence?
A
- Non specific defences inside the body that inhibit or destroy pathogens
- React to any pathogen, regardless of species
- WBC involved in most of these responses
6
Q
What is the process of inflammation?
A
- Pathogen / toxin enters body
- Clot forms
- Inflammatory chemicals released (e.g histamines)
- Blood vessels dilate and permeability increases
- This increases blood flow to the area and allows leukocytes to get into tissue spaces
