Q

Near Death Experience

A

Some people, when they are close to death or in and intense situation claim to have a sense of leaving their bodies and seeing what exists beyond this life

17
Q

Explain Plato and his beliefs in Dualism

A

He argued that the human body is constantly changing and decaying. The soul however he argued was eternal. According to him when a human dies their body dies but their soul lives on in a perfect world. Christians and Muslims agreed with his argument but instead said that the soul went to heaven. There is no proof however of this perfect world of a soul.

18
Q

Explain Dawkins and his beliefs in Materialism

A

Evolutionary biologist who argues that there is no soul and that instead we are simply made of different cells of DNA. When we die our cells dies and nothing is left over. There is no after life, no heaven, no hell, no reincarnation, just death. A problem with this is that surely we are made up of something more than skin and bones. Having no soul means that things such as love is simply just a chemical reaction, people in love may argue against this.

19
Q

Explain a legacy

A

Stories of a person’s life that have been handed down through generations or a community. For example, Elvis Presley’s body died in 1977 yet many believe he is still alive through music and his film.

20
Q

Explain Scripture

A

” He who believes in me, though he dies, yet shall he live” Christians believe that people will go to heaven, in a spiritual body has Jesus did. or maybe hell?

21
Q

Explain Ghosts

A

Manifestation of dead people - often more than one person see’s them so they cannot be hallucinations, or the same ghost is seen in more than one place. As ghost could walk through walls, this supported the belief in the resurrection of the body as it seemed that the body resurrected in a spiritual form. However ghost could be hallucinations or a trick of the light or a hoax made by someone to trick others.

22
Q

Explain Channelling

A

Some people believe that certain people can communicate with the dead, often give people accurate information about the person who has died. However investigations into mediums prove many of them are frauds and that they can just read people’s body language in order to get money out of them.

23
Q

Explain Near Death Experience

A

People who have been declared dead have been brought back to life. Many claim to have had an experience and often these are very similar, going towards a light a sense of happiness and seeing dead relatives, however NDE’s are given the name as the person is not really dead the experiences could be due to the lack of oxygen to the brain.

24
Q

Arguments against immortality

A

Science: Once you are dead you are just dead due to the fact that all the cells and DNA inside your body are also inactive so nothing can remain for there to be any kind of soul.
Cryonics: Preserving humans so they could be resuscitated - Ted Williams baseball player believed that he will be brought back to life in the future, if this is possible will this prove that there is no soul and this hasn’t left your body for an afterlife.
Space: Humans are exploring space and have yet to find any evidence of the afterlife - the souls of the dead becoming one with the universe. However many explorers of space have seen proof there is a God in a sense of power.
Body’s decay: People can see for themselves that the bodies of dead people are not everlasting. They have proof that the physical form of humans doesn’t survive death. In the past dead bodies have been dug up only to find skeletons with no flesh or organs and have decayed over time. People say that the soul is the immortal part and not the body.
