What/who was Jim Crow

A

Jim crow segregation laws developed rapidly between 1887-91 in 8 southern states. It introduced racial segregation on trains and extending them to official waiting rooms.
After 1891 Jim Crow segregation laws were passed for all public places

Forms of discrimination

A

Lynching, hangings. Groups would claim to exercise their rights for society. Between 1889-1918 2,000 African Americans were lynched a year.

How did the US federal government plan to deal with native Americans?

A

Native American children was forcedly placed in schools far away so the parents could not visit. The schools would teach them English and make them have Christian views, they would cut there braids and make them as “American” as possible.

Dawes general allotment act of 1877

A

Gave legal form to piecemeal practice of “many years” standing, it broke up reservation lands into small units of farm land. Each head of family could be given 160 acres of land or 80 acres per person. Any Native American who agreed to this and “adopted the manors of a civilised life” were granted citizenship after 25 years.

The battle of wounded knee

A

In the 1890s the Sioux in South Dakota did the ghost danced as the believed it would bring power and peace. American forces did not like the ghost dance craze and in an effort to arrest one of the Sioux leaders they killed him. Bands of the Sioux tribe fled Dakota. In December 1890 a Cavalry attacked Sioux at wounded knee, 700 died including women and children.
