Fled to Britain to avoid war, natural disaster or persecution from home country.
If they are allowed to stay, they become ‘refugees’ 26%.
What is an illegal immigrant?
Enter Britain without permission or overstay their Visa.

Polish Resettlement act in 1947 allowed Polish people who had helped in WWII to come to Britain (100,000 poles came once the act was passed)

What is the European voluntary workers (EVW) scheme?
After WWII, Britain needed to recruit workers to rebuild Britain (factories, mines, hospitals and transport network)
Migrants that arrived could not change jobs unless approved by government
Many were discriminated .e.g not promoted
They lived in camps
Poor schooling
They formed choirs, dances, festivals, sports teams etc

What led to the EEC being established?
1957 to 1992
European leaders wanted to avoid another war and instead to create peace as there were lots of immigrants with different languages, culture and history.
EU countries joined together to improve economy and given citizenship status
It was then called EU (European Union) in 1992
When did Britain join EEC?
1973 (they joined later as they were already part of British Empire)
They joined because of the improvements to economy
