Land Bridge theory
Theory that animals and people traveled from Siberia to Alaska across a land bridge that was exposed during the ice age. Today, these two lands are separated by a strech of water called the Bering Strait
Old immigrants
People immigrating to the U.S. mainlu from Northerna nd Western Europe. Were viewed as easy to assimilate due to similar language and customs of previous groups in the U.S.
New immigrants
People immigrating to the U.S. mainlu from Southern and Eastern Europe and Asia, after 1880. Tended to speak differnt languages, practice different religions, and have different customs, thus viewed as difficult to assimilate.
push factors
Reasons why people leave a place. These tend to be negative -> reasons that push individuals to immigrate
Pull Factors
Reasons why people choose to move to a certain place. Tend to be positive -> reasons the “pull” individuals to an area
Ellis Island
Island in harbor of NY city. Chief immigration station of the US was on Ellis island from 1892 to 1943, a time when millions of people, especially from Europe, came to the US.
Angel Island
Island in San Francisco Bay. From 1910-1940 it was the processing station for immigrants arriving from Asia
The American Dream
Belief that with hard work, everyone has the opportunity to succeed in America. Became a powerfull pull factor to the US
Statue of Liberty
Statue in NY Harbor the represents freedom, liberty, and a chance at a new life to many imigrants who have come to the US
The New Colossus
Poem by Emma Lazarus theat is engraved on a tablet within the pedestal on which the Statue of Liberty stands. Offeres an idealistic vision of America as a welcomer and protector of immigrants
Tenements
A room forming a separate residence within a house or block of apartments. Often run down, overcrowded, and unsanitary.
Urbanization
Popular shift from rural to urban areas. A growth of cities due to increase of population and availability of jobs
Nativism
Favoring policies geared towards protecting those born in the US (Native to the country)
Quota
A limit (In this case of people from certain areas of the world who can immigrate to the US)
Assimilate
Process of becoming part of another culture
