What is a transitional denture?
A denture for a patient gradually losing teeth.
What is an addition in terms of dentures?
Adding one or more teeth to an existing denture.
What is an interim denture?
A denture made with the intention of adding more teeth gradually.
What are the benefits of a transitional denture?
- increases patient adaptation
- increases speed of delivery
- can stage extractions
Why might additions not work as well on molar teeth?
Because socket shape varies in molars.

- leave the denture in the alginate
- send to the lab

- cut space and add a tooth
Why might a denture fitting be painful for additions?
Due to inflammation post extraction.
What can be added to addition dentures to increase retention?

What is an overdenture?
A denture used when a pt keeps the tooth roots instead of a full extraction.
What does an overdenture use as support?
The left over roots.
What are immediate dentures?
Dentures which are fitted immediately after extraction.
Why might a patient want an immediate denture?
For aesthetic reasons.
What are the possible disadvantages of an immediate denture?
- suboptimal fit
- fit may worsen over time
- needs replacing after 6 months
- can cause gingival recession
Why might an immediate denture fit worsen over time?
Due to healing and bone remodelling after the extraction.
What is the problem with taken an impression on loose teeth?
They might come out with the impression material.
