What is an immediate denture
It is a denture that is ready for insertion immediately after tooth extraction
Why do we have immediate dentures

What are the advantages of immediate dentures
- Aesthetics
- Patients can continue to use mouth for function
- Neutral zone is maintained
- Vertical dimension is maintained
- Ability to control haemorrhaging
- Speech
- Tooth drifting prevented
- Bone resorption reduced
What is the neutral zone
The space between the muscles of mastication and tongue when then equal each other out
Name the different types of immediate dentures
- Full flanged
- Half flanged
- Socket fitted
In which case would a full flange immediate denture be indicated
- No large labial undercut
- When good lip support is needed
- Maximum retention and stability
In which case would a half flange immediate denture be indicated
Larger labial undercuts present
What are the problems associated with half flange immediate dentures
Less lip support
Less retentive
Less supportive
What are the problems with immediate dentures
Become ill fitting after 2-3 months due to alveolar bone resorption
How can we over come the problem of an ill-fitting immediate denture
- Reline or rebase the immediate denture
- Prescribe a new denture after a period of 3 months
- Add teeth to patients existing denture
When is it easy to reline or rebase an immediate denture
Easy fro full or half flanged dentures
How do we make an immediate denture
- Primary impressions
- Special tray construction for secondary impressions
- Occlusal rim construction to record jaw relations and incisal height (may not be necessary)
- Mount models with occlusal rims with average value articulators
- Construct try in
- Teeth removed and placed at correct sulcus depths by technicians
- Denture finished in acrylic and returned to clinic
What do occlusal rims do
They are used to record OVD, midline and to ensure an accurate relationship exists between upper and lower jaw
After given a patient their immediate denture what must you do
Recall them in 24 hours
