Imflammation p1 undone Flashcards
what is inflammation
Inflammation is a response to stimuli that can cause your body damage:
Pathogens
Foreign Proteins
A response to noxious molecules
A response physical trauma (including damaged cells/tissues)
Sterile or non-sterile (due to infection)
what is the function of inflammation
Function is to protect from danger/damage, promote healing (resolution – see Part 2, PM2A2 infections teaching)
But can lead to tissue damage
can be acute or chronic
what are the Cardinal signs of inflammation
Heat (Calor)
Redness (Rubor)
Swelling (Tumor)
Pain (Dolor)
Loss of function
what is an Innate immune response and name an example
- inflammation
Non-adaptive
Activated immediately - involves pattern recognition receptors (PRRs)
Roughly divided into cellular and vascular events (occur simultaneously)
Triggers or recruits adaptive immune response
what is Adaptive immune response
Immunological “memory”
Learns, recognises and remembers a challenge (i.e. adapts)
