Imaging of the Urinary system Flashcards
What is the best imaging modality to diagnose renal tract stones?
CT
What is the imaging modality of choice in staging of renal tumours?
CT
What is the least helpful imaging modality in assessment of patient with suspected renal artery stenosis?
USS
When might you need to carry out renal imaging?
Renal colic and renal stone disease - diagnosis and follow up
Haematuria
Suspected renal mass
UTIs
Hypertension
Which renal imaging techniques are used?
Plain film
Contrast studies - IVU, Pyelography, Cystography
USS +/- contrast
CT and CTU
MR and MRU
Isotope scanes
PET-CT
What is Pyelography?
Injection of contrast into the ureters
Micturating cystourethrography
Produces specialised x-ray pictures.
These help assess the structure and function of the lower urinary tract, in particular the bladder and the urethra. Shows how well the bladder is clearing etc
Pros and cons of USS in relation to urinary system
Advantages - contrast is not nephrotoxic
Disadvantages - poor visualisation of ureters
Pros and cons of CT in relation to urinary system
Advantages - Currently the imaging modality of choice for detection of renal stones, staging renal tumours, investigation of hematuria
Disadvantages - Contrast reaction and nephrotoxicity
What can a DMSA isotope scan be used for?
To look for renal scarring
What can a MAG3 isotope scan be used for?
Assess renal function and drainage
A bone scan can be used to look for what?
Metastatic disease e.g prostate cancer
