Simile
A comparison in which one thing is said to be like something else
Metaphor
Describes an object or an action in a way that isn’t literally true but helps explain an idea
Personification
Using a non living thing and giving it human characteristics
Alliteration
A series of words in which the same letter is repeated
Onomatopeia
Name given to words that imitate the sound they are describing
Hyperbole
Deliberate exaggeration in order to emphasise the point being made
Litoes
It is an understatement
Euphimism
Making an unwelcome truth seem less harsh or unpleasant by dressing it up in offensive language
Circumlocution
State something in a long roundabout way rather than addressing the subject simply and directly
Paradox
A statement that appears to be a contradiction but which on closer examination does contain a truth
Oxymoron
Two opposites are placed side by side to heighten the effect of contrast
Juxtaposition
Means placing side by side, writer places to words next to each other to create a contrast
Neologism
The coining of a new word, usually to describe a recent development or invention for which an appropriate term does not exist
Archaism
It denotes a word or phrase from the past that is no longer in current use but is still generally understood
Cliche
Used to be original but has become overused
