IM Forces and Lab Techniques Flashcards
Is cyclohexane a polar or nonpolar?
Nonpolar
Is toluene a polar or nonpolar solvent?
Nonpolar solvent
Fingerprint region
The 600-1400 cm-1 region found exclusively within IR spectrums and is unique to each molecule
silica gel chromatography separates compounds based on __________
Polarity
What compounds elute first/last in silica gel chromatography
Silica gel has a polar surface so it interacts more with polar molecules, thus polar molecules stick to the column and take longer to elute (elute last) and nonpolar molecules elute first
what is infared (IR) spectroscopy used for?
- to identfy the functional group present in a molecule
what is nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy used for?
- tool used to determine the molecular structure of a compound
- 2 types: HNMR and CNMR
chemical shift of HNMR signals:
- a proton with less electron density around it is considered to be deshielded (protons next to EN atoms, EN atom withdraws electron density) –> appears further to the left (downfield)
- a proton with more electron density around it is considered shielded (further from EN atom) –> appears to the right (upfield)
HNMR signal for alcohol and amines H’s
~ 0.5/1 - 5/5.5
HNMR signal for aromatic ring H’s
~ 6-8
HNMR signal for aldehyde H
~ 9 - 10
HNMR signal for sp3 hybridized carbon H’s
~ 0.5 - 3.5
HNMR signal for phenol (PhOH) H
~ 4 - 8
HNMR signal for sp2 hybridized carbon H’s (doubl bond)
~ 4 - 6
HNMR signal for amide’s H (RCONH)
~ 5.5 - 9.5
