What is Chronic Illness?
Comes on more slowly and lasts for a long period of time, sometimes a lifetime. Often physical symptoms can be treated with medication, but not usually cured. Eg, diabetes, heart disease, asthma
Physical negative effects of chronic illness
Poor rate of growth, unusual physiological change during puberty, restricted movement.
Intellectual negative effects of chronic illness
Disrupted learning because of missing school, difficulties in thinking and problem solving, memory problems.
Emotional negative effects of chronic illness
Negative self-concept, stress
Social negative effects of chronic illness
Isolation, loss of independence, difficulties developing relationships.
How to mange chronic illness
Address the negative PIES. Might use medication to control symptoms, continued schooling while in hospital, counselling.
What is Acute Illness?
Starts quickly and lasts for a short period of time. E.g. bacterial and viral infections and heart palpitation.
