Iliopsoas Flashcards
Is the iliopsoas monoarticular or polyarticular?
Polyarticular
Which muscles make up the iliopsoas?
Psoas major and iliacus
What parts of the body do the iliopsoas affect?
Lower back, Pelvis and Hip
Acts like a pulky as it curves over the front rim of the pelvis on it’s way to the femur
What actions first awakened the iliopsoas?
Walking and sitting in infancy, once awakened it becomes constantly active in activities
Origin of the iliopsoas
Psoas major: L1-L5, body of T12
Iliacus: upper 2/3 of the inner surface of the iliac bone up to inner lip of the iliac crest and anterior sacroiliac
Insertion of the iliopsoas
Lesser trochanter of proximal femur
Innervation of iliopsoas
L1-L4
Chakra illuminated by iliopsoas
2nd, Svadisthana: illuminated by contracting and lengthening the iliopsoas
Antagonists of the iliopsoas
Gluteus maximus: extends the hip and trunk, lengthening and stretching the iliopsoas, esp in back bends
Hamstrings: extends the hip when initiating back bends, can be used to draw opposite leg iliopsoas into a deeper stretch in lunges
Synergists of the iliopsoas
Tensor fascia latta: assists the iliopsoas in hip flexion
Sartorius: assists in hip flexion and external rotation
Rectus femoris: assists in hip flexion and gluteus maximus in stretch during back bend
Pectineus: assists in hip flexion and addiction component stabalizes hip
Posture where the iliopsoas is contracted
Optimally in triangle pose which contraction of the psoas major portion
Revolved variation contracts the iliacus portion
Posture when the iliopsoas is stretched
Camel by contracting the hip and trunk extensors including gluteus maximus; stretch accentuated by contracting the quads
