ILA 4 - THROMBOSIS AND COAGULATION Flashcards
Describe the Normal Coagulation Cascade
Explain the difference in presentation (signs and symptoms) between an arterial thrombosis and a venous thrombosis
Describe Virchow’s triad and explain the pathophysiology of thrombus development
What risk factors does Ali have and how do these relate to Virchow’s triad?
What blood tests would you do to help confirm the diagnosis of a DVT?
Why does the blood level of this ‘substance’ increase with the presence of a DVT?
Heparin and warfarin are used in the treatment of DVT. In relation to the coagulation cascade, explain the action of each
Ali leaves hospital a few days later. What potentially fatal complication of a DVT should they be made aware of and what signs and symptoms should they look out for?
Complication: Pulmonary embolus
What advice would you give to students who need to take long haul flights in order to reduce their risk of developing a DVT?
If travelling for more than 3hrs b plane, train, or car:
- wear loose, comfortable clothes
- do calf exercises at least every 30mins
- walk around whenever you can
- drink plenty of water
- do not drink alcohol or take sleeping pills
- compression stockings
