III. Eliminating Wastes Flashcards
1
Q
A. undigested materials
A
held in rectum until eliminated through anus
- and removed from body
2
Q
B. metabolized materials
A
- carbohydrate metabolism
- protein metabolism
3
Q
B. metabolized materials
1. carbohydrate metabolism
A
carbon dioxide and water are released from blood into the lungs into air
- to glucose then mitochondria
4
Q
B. metabolized materials
2. protein metabolism
A
- ammonia is byproduct of protein
breakdown
^ protein is made of amino acids - ammonia is very toxic
^ we have to get rid of it - ammonia is sent to liver
- the solution to pollution is dilution and diffusion
- bacteria kills ammonia to make proteins
a) making urea
- liver converts ammonia to urea
b) extracting urea from blood
i. kidneys
- kidneys filter wastes from blood
- ureters transport it to bladder
through the ureters
ii. bladder
- urea and other waste stores as
urine in the bladder and eliminated
through the urethra
^ when urea is full, then you need to
use the bathroom
