Ignition And Stating System Flashcards
Name, one general type of inertia starter
Hand, electric, or combination of both
What is a magneto?
Self-contained AC generator driven by engine for the purpose of ignition for reciprocating engine
Why are magneto ignition system preferred over battery type ignition system for reciprocating engine
An independent ignition source do not rely on battery power to provide ignition
What can cause a reciprocating engine to continue to run with the ignition switch is in the off position
Break in P lead from the magneto to the switch, then the ignition cannot be ground the primary circuit
What is the purpose of a condenser in a high tension magneto electrical system?
Prevents arcing at the breaker point, and support rapid collapse of magnetic field around the primary coil.
What does a capacitor do in the magneto circuit?
Prevent arcing at the point when the contact points open and support the collapse of the magnetic field around the primary coil
Where is the E -gap position
When the poles of the rotating magnets are a few degrees past neutral position. The gap is the position which the point begins to open.
What are the three major circuits of a high tension magneto system
Primary ,secondary circuit and magnetic circuit
What are the components of a high tension magnetic circuit
Permanent rotating magnet, soft iron core and pole shoes
What happens when the primary break points opening a magneto?
Opening of break points stops the flow of current in the primary coil. Magnetic field that was emitted by the primary coil collapses. as that happen ,the flex line cut across the winding of the secondary coil, produce high voltage current in the second coil needed to fire to spark plug
What is the piston position when the spark occurs in a cylinder?
Specified number of degrees before TDC of compression stroke
What is dual magneto?
Two magneto in one housing that share rotating magnet and the cam they have their own sets of points ,coil and distributor block
What is the difference between low tension and high tension magneto ignition system
High tension magneto product high voltage in the magneto and flow to the plug through high tension leads
Low tension only product low voltage need transformer to step up the voltage then pass through high tension lead to the spark plug
When the ignition is in the of position, what is the condition of the primary circuit
the primary circuit is completed through ignition switch to ground
What three conditional required to fire plugs in a cylinder with a piston is in prescribed position
Magnet poles must be in E-gap position, breaker point must be open and the distributor must be aligned with the distributor electrode for that cylinder
What is dual ignition system and what part of the system is grounded when the ignition switch is placed in right position
Uses two separate magneto with harness arranged so that each each magneto fires one plug each cylinder and the left magneto is grounded and the switch is turned to the right
What is internal timing of a magneto?
Adjusting the break up points to open when the poles of the rotate magnet are in a E gap position
What is the purpose of an impulse coupling used in a magneto?
The retard, the timing, old spark at the top dead center for starting the engine and provide momentarily high rotational speed to produce a spark at low rpm
What is staggered ignition timing
The firing of one spark plug before the other
What is the proper spark plug reach?
When the electrode end of the plug inside a cylinder is in the best position to achieve ignition
Why is it important to keep track of the cylinders that Spark plugs are installed in.
Spark plug can provide a lot information about the health of a specific cylinder
What type of ignition system is used in most turbine engine
Electronic capacitor type
What is the function of the ignitor Plugs in the turbine engine?
To provide a discharge gap for current, which is stored in the capacitor. Discharge result in a high intensity spark which is ignite to fuel air mixture.
When are turbine engine ignition system normally in use
During engine starting, or restarting the engine
What are the two types of ignitor Plugs?
Annular gap, which is a long reach, extend into the combustion chamber chamber
Constrained gap which is a short reach, does not reach Into combustion chamber
What is the purpose of dual magneto configuration?
For safety and redundancy
How can you tell if a starter commutator is dirty or worn
Noisy starter
What does it mean when the starter relay clicks when the starter switch is placed start position
voltage supply is too low to supply current into the relay coil to fully engage the contact point
What is an advantage of air turbine starters, when compared to electric starter, for large turbine engine?
Light weight don’t have the same cool down period as electrical starter.
Why do turbine ignitors not get a carbon fouled as often as reciprocating engine spark plug
High intensity discharge cleans the igniter
What are the three parts of an ignition system of a turbine
Exciter, ignition lead, and igniter
What is the difference between a temporary magnet and a permanent magnet?
Permanent magnet, retain its magnetic properties for a long period of time
Temporary magnet act like a permanent magnet when they are within a strong magnetic field or have currents flow through them
What does ignition light indicate when timing of magneto?
Indicates the points are beginning to open
In terms of engine crankshaft position, when does ignition event occur
Specified number of degrees before TDC on the compression stroke
What is the purpose of the capacitor in a magneto?
Prevent arcing at the point and aid collapsing of magnetic field
What is the main concern when preparing to make magneto for installation?
Internal timing
What are the three event required to fire a spark plug in a cylinder when the piston is in describe position
Magneto in e-gap position, make a point opening, distributor is electrically aligned with that cylinder
What is the function of duty cycle in relationship to turbine engine ignition system?
Allows operation of the ignition system for giving amount of time, followed by minimum specified cooling down time
Name three source of high-volume low-pressure compressed air commonly used for starting transport aircraft equipped with air turbine starter
APU, GPU, and bleed air from an already running engine
Name the two parts of a starter generator that commonly required periodic inspection to ensure they do not wear beyond operational limits
Commutator and brushes
Between the field and the Armature winding in the starter generator, which ordinarily receive current from operation in the start mode
Both the field and the armature receive current
