Igneous Rocks Flashcards
Felsic rocks are
High in feldspar and quartz (silica)
Igneous rocks form from the
Cooling and crystallisation of magma. They consist of interlocking crystals of different minerals.
Mafic rocks are high in
Iron and magnesium.
Fine-grained rocks -
Crystal sizes are less than 1mm due to rapid cooling at Earths surface.
Coarse grained rocks have
Crystal sizes greater than 1mm, due to slow cooling. These can be intrusive or extrusive.
Three intrusive rocks:
Grabbo, diorite, granite.
Three extrusive rocks:
Basalt, andesite, rhyolite.
When a mineral melts, the ions that compose the mineral….
Separate from the crystals and have an individual existence.
Andesite:
Fine grained, less crystal growth. Paler.
Basalt:
Dark, fine grained. Composed of pyroxene and olivine.
Perioditite:
Dark, coarse grained.
Granite:
Paler. Coarse. Many crystal types, including quartz and feldspar.
