How does IEP affect rehabilitation

A

reduced access to family visits or education when on basic level - reduces prisoners rehabilitation and therefore destroys idea of preventing reoffending with imprisonment

Why is using IEP as punishment bad?

A

Punitive application can lead to negative reaction and they have nothing to lose
Punishment should be applied using prison rules and not IEP, otherwise prisoners can be punished twice

What did PRT suggest that the prisons do?

A

Monitor those on basic level for long periods as they are at high risk of self harm
Train staff better- relationships with staff were much worse where there were higher numbers on basic level, need training on proper usage and benefits of IEP
