identity and responses to class Flashcards
define habitus
dispositions or learned ways of thinking that are shared by a particular social group → this is formed as a result of its position in class structure
Why does school value MC habitus?
MC has the power to be able to define its habitus as superior and impose it on the school → thus school values MC habitus
What does schools having MC habitus lead to?
- As schools have MC habitus those socialised into this gain more symbolic status from the school and are deemed valuable
- Schools devalue WC → symbolic violence occurs reproducing WC lower
What is the wc response to there habitus being devalued?
Nike identities
Why do the wc form a nike identity?
The symbolic violence lead to nike identities as a way of generating self worth
How does school respond to these nike identities?
These identities earned symbolic capital but this brought into conflict with schools dress codes → consequently labelled rebels
What does Archer argue about nike identities?
Archer argues these nike identities is not only cause of marginalisation at school but also there preference for an alternative identity → choose self exclusion as believe that ‘educational success’ is not for them
