Q

Suturing inserts/articulates/interpolates the viewer into the subject position of the film image. Give an example of a camera/editing technique that allows this to happen and how it works. (multiple sentence answer)

A

In Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”, suturing is used in the notorious shower seen where the antagonist makes his first on-screen kill. The extreme tension in the film is elongated by Hitchcock’s decision to delay and stretch out the suturing—giving the illusion that there is no escape because nowhere is safe and the killer cannot yet be seen. Finally when the suturing occurs, shots from strange different angles “break up the sense of wholeness” in the scene, and combined with several close-ups, the viewer is interpolated directly into the action.
