Erikson: Identify vs Role Confusion (10 - 20)
- Trying new multiple identities
- Trying to figure out who they are as a person
- Sometimes identify can pose them, which will lead to role confusion but also it can develop some inferiority
- Consists of crises and commitment
Four Identity Statuses:
1. Identify Diffusion
2. Identify Foreclosure
3. Identity Moratorium
4. Identify Achievement
Identify Diffusion
(no crises no commitment)
- Lack of commitment to any particular identity and a lack of exploration
- Individuals may feel lost or directionless, with little sense of who they are or what they want to do in life
Identify Moratorium
(in crises no commitment)
- Individuals who are actively exploring different identities and life paths without making firm commitments
- May be in a state of “identity crisis”, experiencing confusion and uncertainty about who they are and what they want to become
Identify Foreclosure
(commitment no crises)
- Individuals have committed to an identity without expiring alternatives
- They may have adopt the values, beliefs and roles that are handed down to them by authority figures such as parents or society without critically evaluating other options and they tend to just normally accept the identity given to them
Identity Achievement
(crises and have committed)
- Experience crises and committed
- Explored and ultimately stick to it
- Identity becomes solid
- Stage for progression
