What is done with suspect descriptions?

A

Where appropriate distribute to search, area canvass and investigation teams and /or to the media.
A careful risk assessment is required before releasing a suspect description to the media. Must be authorised by the OCI.

What is FACES?

A

A computerised facial ID system.

OC Suspects should consult with OC Witnesses whether anyone saw the suspect and should do this.

What needs to be considered with media and property duplicates?

A

An appreciation must be made of the info available and the info needed.
Using photos of clothing or other items similar to those used by the offender in media releases may lead to the suspect disposing of it. These photos can be used in a combination of ways:
- media release
- for investigators in area canvass
- for suspect inquiries

A

A photo board should be set up displaying the photos and details of any suspects interviewed or to be interviewed.

What do you need to consider for a suspects residence when you don’t know the ID of the suspect?

A
  • NIA inquiries
  • property owner info with the council
  • conduct a reconn
  • surveillance on the address
  • photograph persons and vehicles entering or leaving the address
  • monitor the phone - PO pursuant to S.74 SS Act or SDW under S.53 SS Act
  • Inquiries with local authority or utilities

What are TIE inquiries?

A

TIE is Trace, Interview and Eliminate.
TIE categories are created (shared common characteristics by a group of people)
The suspect team interviews the groups using elimination criteria established by the OCI to eliminate them.
