identifying structure Flashcards
what structural features are used to identify different type of microorganisms
shape, size, arrangement, cell wall(gram +ve/-ve), structures(flagella, spores etc.)
give some common shapes of bacteria
cocci(spheres)
bacilli(rods)
spiral
describe how cocci bacteria divide and form colonies
they can divide in 1 plane to produce chains of 4-20 molecules
OR divide in 3 planes to produce clumps
describe how bacilli bacteria form colonies
they form chains, can also have curved rods called vibrio(gram -ve)
describe the different structures of spiral bacterium
they can form rigid or flexible spirals
what different structures can be used to identify microorganisms
flagella, pili, spores, capsules
describe what a spore is
an inert structure that is resistant to chemical ad physical challenge
bacteria can also be classified by their ability to use/tolerate oxygen, give the different classifications
aerobic = grow in oxygen/air
obligate aerobes = require oxygen
obligate anaerobes = killed by oxygen
facultative anaerobes = tolerate oxygen
