What is the definition, or what does ‘children’ refer to?
A person who is below the age of 14 years.
What are the Needs and Concerns of children, and their characteristics?
PHYSICAL NEEDS
Bodily care such as food, shelter, clothing, sleep, and play time, medical care and freedom from physical harm (security)
PSYCHOLOGICAL NEEDS
Sense of identity about themselves as a unique individual who has value (self-worth) and capacity to act in a socially acceptable and appropriate manner.
COGNITIVE NEEDS
Need to receive cognitive and intellectual stimulation through formal and informal education (playing, gaming, drawing, etc) to enable them to develop learning and thinking skills and abilities.
EMOTIONAL NEEDS
Need to nurture nurturance and affection to enable them to develop appropriate emotions towards themselves and towards others i.e. they need to feel accepted by parents and significant others, as well as appreciated for their efforts.
SOCIAL NEEDS
Children to relate to (bond) and interact with other people in their environment, i.e. they need to feel a sense of belonging to a group and be accepted by others, particularly by their peers.
MORAL NEEDS
Need to follow and follow rules of conduct relating to what is considered right and wrong within the society.
