Identifying different types of WBC Flashcards
What 4 things to look at to identify a WBC
Size
Appearance of cytoplasm
Shape of nucleus
Staining characteristics
Description of neutrophils
Fine
Purple staining cytoplasmic granules
A nucleus with 2-5 lobes
Comprise 50-70%of leukocytes- string phagocytes
Description of Eosinophils
Have some granules
Stain deep red
Bilobed nucleus
Makes up 1-3% of circulating leukocytes- kill certain parasites and moderate inflammation
Description of basophils
Fewer granules than eosinophils
stain blue
Account for 1% of leukocytes
Promote inflammation by secreting heparin and histamine
What do argamulocytes not have?
gramular cytoplasm, have a longer life span
What are the two types of argamulocytes?
Monocytes and lymphocytes
Description of monocytes
Lowest circulating blood cells
lifespan weeks-months
strong phagocytes-migrate to same tissues and differentiate into macrophages
Description of lymphocytes
Long lived Smallest WBC Large round nucleus 25-33% of leukocytes Responsible for immunity, attach specific foreign pathogens
What is WBC count
3,500 to 10,500 mm3
Can change under abnormal conditions
What is granulocytes
Have granular cytoplasm short life span (12hrs)
