Identify: Target organs & principle effects of Hormones Flashcards
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
Target Organ: Adrenal Cortex Pituitary
Principle Effects: Stimulates Adrenal glands to release cortisol
Aldosterone
Target Organ: Kidney tubules
Principle Effects: regulates the salt (sodium) and water balance of the body; excretion of potassium by kidneys
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
Target Organ: Kidneys
Principle effects: Prevents output of large amounts of urine
(diuresis = urine production)
Calcitonin
Target Organ: Bone & Thyroid gland
Principle Effects: lower calcium levels in blood
Cortisol
Target Organ: liver, muscle, adipose tissue, and pancreas
Principle Effects: increases blood levels of glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids
Epinephrine
Target Organ: eyes, heart, airways, adrenal medulla
Principle Effects: Heart rate and blood
pressure increase, blood glucose levels increase, respiratory airways dilate
Norepinephrine
Target Organ: Adrenal Medulla
Principle Effects: Heart rate and blood
pressure increase, blood glucose levels increase, respiratory airways dilate
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Target Organ: ovaries & testes
Principle Effects: stimulates menstrual cycle/growth of eggs & sperm production
Glucagon
Target Organ: liver
Principle Effects: Breakdown of glycogen to glucose
Growth Hormone (GH)
Target Organ: thymus gland
Principle Effects: Growth-promoting effects
Insulin
Target Organ: liver
Principle effects: Enhances transport of glucose into most body cells, Inhibits the breakdown of glycogen to glucose, inhibits synthesis of new glucose
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Target Organ: ovaries & testes
Principle Effects: stimulates ovulation and helps with the hormone production needed to support pregnancy
Oxytocin
Target Organ: produced in the hypothalamus and targets uterus and breast tissue
Principal Effects: stimulate uterine contractions in labor and childbirth or ejaculation
Parathyroid Hormone (PTH)
Target Organ: bone & kidneys
principle effects: frequent urination and thirst, muscle aches, weakness
Prolactin
Target Organ: Mammary gland (breast/nipple)
Principle effects: milk production and the development of mammary glands within breast tissues
