What are common nouns
Common nouns are names that are given to ordinary objects. We can easily group common nouns into things that we can see and touch
EXAMPLE:book chair table horse fish banana hair tooth etc
What are abstract nouns
An abstract noun refers to some thing that we cannot see touch or measure. These are not physical,concrete things and are usually feelings or emotions. Example: friendship imagination kindness courage optimism concentration love respect
What are collective nouns
Collective nouns is the name of a group of objects people or creatures. It is a better way of saying lots of ……..
EXAMPLE: flight of stairs or a staff of teachers
What are pronouns
We use pronouns to avoid repetition
Example:Joan plays the piano. Joan practices the piano daily .
Joan plays the piano.she practices daily
In the sentence above,she takes the place of Joan and it takes the place of the piano . This stops us repeating ourselves .
What are adjectives
Adjectives are words that are used to describe nouns. They add interest and. Color to sentences by adding a description or giving more information about them
Example: the brave girls walked along the long and winding road towards the enormous castle
What are verbs
A verb is a doing word.it is also called an action word
Example: the boy drove his parents to Durban
What are adverbs
An adverb gives us more information about the verb and describes how a certain action is being done
Example: we are going to the concert today
What are conjunctions
Conjunctions are connecting words they are used to join two sentences into a single sentence
Example: He wrote the test although he was nervous
What are proper nouns
Proper nouns always begin with capital letters. They are the names given to people places days and months N.B: if a common noun forms a part of the name of the proper noun,then both the words must be given capital letters
