Fe3+ with NH3
reddish brown precipitate
- insoluble in excess
Carbonate
add dilute HCl
- effervescence occurs & colourless gas is evolved turning limewater milky
-> gas is CO2
Nitrate
add NaOH followed by a pinch of Al powder, warm carefully
- pungent gas evolved turning damp red litmus paper blue
-> gas is NH3
Sulfate
add dilute HNO3 followed by Ba(NO3)2(aq)
- no change on addition of HNO3
- white precipitate of BaSO4 formed
Cl-
I-
Br-
add dilute HNO3 followed by AgNO3
- white precipitate of AgCl
- cream precipitate of AgBr
- yellow precipitate of AgI
I-
add dilute HNO3 followed by Pb(NO3)2(aq)
- yellow precipitate of PbI is formed
Sulfite
add small volume of dilute HCl
- colourless gas with irritating smell is evolved
- decolourises acidified KMnO4 from purple -> colourless
Flame test for cations
- Li+ : red
- Na+ : yellow
- K+ : lilac
- Ca2+ : orange-red
- Ba2+ : apple green / light green
- Cu2+ : bluish green
H2 test
- apply lighted splint
- burns with a pop sound
O2 test
- apply glowing splint
- relights glowing splint
CO2 test
- pass through limewater
- turns limewater milky
NH3
- apply damp red litmus paper
- litmus paper turns blue
Cl2
- apply damp blue litmus paper
- litmus paper turns red
SO2
- pass through acidified K2CR2O7
- acidified K2CR2O7 changes from orange -> green
Ethene test
- pass through aqueous bromine
- decolourises aqueous bromine from reddish brown -> colourless
