Identification of ions Flashcards
What are flame tests used for
to identify the metal in metal ions
What colour flame does Lithium give
crimson
What colour flame does calcium give
orange red
What colour flame does Sodium give
Yellow
What colour flame does Copper give
blue
What colour flame does Potassium give
lilac
How would you identify a metal ion without a flame test
add the substance on a wire loop and put it in sodium hydroxide solution.
What precipitate does copper form?
A blue precipitate
What precipitate does Iron (II) form?
A dirty green precipitate
What precipitate does Iron (III) form?
A brown precipitate
What precipitate does Magnesium, Calcium and Aluminium form?
White precipitate
How would you know a white precipitate is or isn’t aluminium
Add excess sodium hydroxide and aluminium will redissolve
How do you test for Carbonates?
React it with dilute acids eg. Hydrochloric acid. You would obsereve effervescence and it would turn the limewater cloudy
How do you test for sulfate ions?
Add barium chloride to hydrochloric acid. Produces a white precipitate
How do you test for halide ions?
Add silver nitrate and dilute nitric acid
