What are eye-witness identification procedures designed to do?
- Test the eye witness’ ability to identify the suspect as the person they saw on previous occassion
- safeguards against mistaken identification
How do we identify suspects?
Biometrics (finger prints, DNA), eye witnesses (e-fit recognition, PNC facial recognition, ID parades, photographs, VIPER (video identification parades), Code D statements, footwear impressions, fibres, vein patterns, jewellery, items of clothing, voice identification, hand writing
How must a first description be recorded initially?
Word for word in pocket notebook/ bodywork video to be documented later or over the radio to put it on a log
What is street identification?
Getting the victim of a crime in your car and driving them around to see whether they can identify the suspect - you must keep this fair and ensure that the victim is the one to pick out the suspect
If a witness identifies a suspect during a street identification, what should you do?
- call for someone else to get the suspect to avoid cross contamination
- formal route of identification, such as ID parade (cannot bring the witness to identify the suspect then and there)
