Idealism Flashcards
What is idealism?
All that exists are mind and ideas
All we perceive are PQ’s and SQ’s
Everything is mind dependent
What does Berkeley think about Idealism and why?
Doesn’t make sense
Something that has size and shape must also have colour
What does indirect realism think of idealism
If we argue we need a material substratum in which qualities exist
We have no conception of this independent of its qualities
Idealism counter to indirect realism
We can know what the world is, because by experience ideas we are experiencing the world
Berkeley’s master argument
Can’t conceive of anything existing independent of all minds
When we think of such a thing
Our thinking makes it not mind-independent
Objection to Berkeley’s master argument
Confused thought with what a thought is about
How do physical objects not cause my perceptions?
What we perceive is involuntary and what we imagine is voluntary, instead God causes my perceptions and ideas are passive
What does Berkeley believe about objects unperceived?
Exist in the mind of God
Objections to idealism
No 2 people ever perceive the same thing
Each perceives the ideas in their own mind
Berkeley’s response to objections to idealism
They perceive similar things
Copies of one idea in God’s mind
How can what I perceive exist in God’s mind?
Perceive copies of ideas the exist eternally in God’s understanding when God wills me to do so.
