Ideal Gas Equation Flashcards
What is the ideal gas equation?
PV = nRT
What is the name and unit for P?
Pressure in Pascals (Pa)
What is the name and unit for V?
Volume in Cubic metres (m³)
What is the name and unit for n?
Moles in mol
What is the name and unit for R?
Ideal gas constant in J/Kmol
It is ALWAYS 8.31 J/Kmol
What is the name and unit for T?
Temperature in Kelvin (K)
What is the formula for Kelvin?
Temperature in °C + 273 = Kelvin
What is the ideal gas theory?
The kinetic theory of gases states that molecules in gases are constantly moving
The theory makes the following assumptions:
1~ Gas molecules are moving very fast & randomly
2~ Molecules hardly have any volume
3~ Molecules don’t attract or repel each other (no intermolecular forces)
4~ No kinetic energy is lost when the gas molecules collide with each other
5~ Temperature of the gas is related to the average kinetic energy of the molecules
Gases that follow the kinetic theory of gases are called ideal gases
However, in reality gases do not fit this description exactly but may come very close and are called real gases
